SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — A long list of accomplishments and a bright, but challenging future. Sioux Falls Mayor Paul TenHaken hosted his State of the City address at the Convention Center this morning. Among the challenges, sales tax revenues running behind expectations that are creating a difficult budgeting process.
While watching over those immediate needs, the Mayor laid out bold plans for the future.
All of that comes on the heels of yesterday’s announcement of plans to purchase the Sanford Health Tea/Ellis Wellness Center on the city’s west side. There were a couple of notes of concern in the Mayor’s address. The biggest has to do with the potential impact of a ballot measure to repeal the state sales tax on consumable items. He cautioned that passage of the measure would force deep cuts in the city budget and services.
Earlier this week, city finance officials cautioned that sales tax revenues are already below expectations for the current budget year.
