PIERRE, SD (KELO.com) — Today marks the deadline for submitting petitions to place measures on the November ballot in South Dakota. The Open Primaries group filed over 46-thousand signatures yesterday. The proposed constitutional amendment calls for one primary listing all candidates for certain offices, with the top two advancing to the general election. Joe Kirby, one of the sponsors, says it would give independents like him a voice in the primary process.
Petitions were filed last week for measures restoring abortion rights in the state and repealing the state sales tax on groceries. Petitions were also delivered today calling for a vote on the legalization of recreational marijuana.
